Three subtly different routes:

  • Direct to PhD: Applies as PhD student. Does not receive MS degree, only PhD
    • Does not take MS exam in fifth semester. Takes Qualifying exam instead.
  • MS to PhD: Applies as PhD student; Receives MS degree along the way to PhD
    • Takes MS exam in fifth semester. Must file petition with Grad College to transfer to MS curriculum. Graduates, receives MS degree. Petitions to transfer back to PhD curriculum.
  • MS continuing to PhD: Applies as MS student; continues to PhD
    • Takes MS exam in fifth semester. Completes MS degree as normal.
    • In the beginning of their final year, must contact Graduate Program Coordinator to have initial application recoded for following semester and recoded to PhD program.
      • GPC can assist in updating materials.
      • Application will be reviewed by Graduate Studies Committee, voted on, and a new offer letter will be issued to student. Require two new letters of recommendation.
      • After MS graduation, they will be switched to PhD curriculum.
  • They are not eligible for assistantships, but they can TA for other departments.
