Reducing the number of different wordmarks being used across campus is an important part of campus’s strategy to reinforce the singular brand that belongs to all of us – the University of Illinois. Within Illinois, we are the College of ACES.

When the university rebranded in 2020, they eliminated all department and unit wordmarks. Only primary academic entities – like the College of ACES – get wordmarks, while secondary and tertiary entities (i.e., departments, offices, and programs) should use the College of ACES as their primary brand. These specific entities can still be mentioned but should only be highlighted in headlines and marketing copy; not used as part of a logo.

A few rules:

  • The College of ACES wordmark and department/unit names must be used together on all print and electronic marketing materials that go out on behalf of your department/unit. We don’t want department/unit names used without ACES because it is vitally important for our brand that people know we are connected.
  • Marcom needs to be involved whenever the ACES wordmark is used to ensure brand consistency. We will work to provide templates when needed.
  • The ACES stacked wordmark can be used on certain merchandise, with or without the department/unit name.
  • The Block I logo should never be used as a standalone element with a department/unit name without also mentioning the College of ACES. The hierarchy is always University – College of ACES – Entity; therefore, removing College of ACES would remove the department/unit's connection to the university.
